Apex Compute is developing a GPU with an open-source Vulkan driver built on Mesa, according to a submission to Khronos’ Vulkan documentation repository. The change was merged on October 2, adding identifiers for the company and its driver to the Vulkan registry.

The update assigns Apex the APEX author tag, vendor identifier VK_VENDOR_ID_APEX with value 0x10009, and driver identifier VK_DRIVER_ID_APEX with value 32. In the submission, Apex explains that it has not yet obtained a PCI-SIG vendor ID. The company also links to its public Mesa repository.

On its website, Apex describes GPU intellectual property under development alongside its Unified Engine for AI acceleration. The company targets Vulkan 1.4 and DirectX 12 Ultimate, with graphics and AI processing intended to share a platform. Its broader edge AI roadmap includes applications in drones, autonomous vehicles and robotics.

For developers building edge AI and vision products, that combination could offer a path to integrating perception, inference and graphics on a common computing platform. The registry addition establishes Apex’s identity within Vulkan’s ecosystem; it does not establish driver conformance or production readiness. The immediate development is a registry update supporting the company’s ongoing GPU development work and its planned open-source Vulkan software stack.
